MADRID BY BICYCLE 2019

To travel by bike in Madrid is to doing it in a more ecological, sustainable, healthy and fast way.

Thanks to the commitment of the City Council for this type of mobility and the love that many residents and tourists profess to pedal, the Spanish capital is gaining ground traffic for a way of life more simple, economic and efficient.

And it is that, go to work, theater, shopping or a meal with friends freed of traffic jams, the rise of fuel, shortening distances and enjoying the wonderful sun of Madrid is worth it, without a doubt.

The network of bicycle lanes or bike lane Madrid designed by the Madrid Consistory allows to get the highest possible performance to the use of the bicycle in the city as a transport. At your disposal a large number of routes by bike in Madrid, either through urban roads to make regular trips, for the green ring to practice sports or tourist routes or leisure designed for those who visit the city.

The cycling infrastructure of the city of Madrid has, in this sense, with more and more kilometers of cycling routes between segregated bike lanes and cycle lanes.

At the moment, these are somewhat timid measures, however, it is expected that the City Council expanded the possibilities as the demand and the need of the users grows.

Bicycles can be transported in the following means of transport:

  • Bicycles in Madrid’s Suburban trains

With certain specifications, such as, for example, that the limit of bicycles allowed will be determined by the availability of space, except on line C-9, where the maximum number of bicycles is six per composition

  • Bicycles in the Madrid metro

Only bicycles can be transported in the head car and in the tail car. The timetable for transporting bicycles in the Madrid metro is from Monday to Friday except from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., and on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays without exception.

  • EMT Bus Bicycles

It is allowed to travel with a folded bicycle of the size equivalent to a hand luggage or with a standard as long as the bus is provided with specific external support, as in the Express Airport line and on line 33 (which connects Príncipe Pio with Casa de Campo) on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays.

BiciMAD

 

In addition to the different rental bikes companies that you can find in the city, Madrid has its own public bicycle system available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

This service is called BiciMAD and has been very successful for its efficiency and comfort (all bikes are electric), availability (there are more than 2,000 bicycles in service), flexibility (there is a station every 200 meters) and low cost (the annual fee, if you have the transport payment of the Regional Transport Consortium of the Community of Madrid, is only € 15 plus + a first fraction of use of 30 minutes for € 0.50 and consecutive € 0.60).

BiciMAD Madrid has provided great support in terms of mobility for those who want to make daily trips by electric bicycle and do not have or do not want to acquire one owned, as well as for those tourists who want to get to know the city on two wheels comfortably and quickly.

Mobility by bicycle in Madrid, increasingly safe

Bike mobility in Madrid should not scare you.

If you follow the established guidelines and regulations, it is a safe way of transport.

Here are some tips on transporting bicycles from Madrid City Council, so you can make your daily transfers with total comfort and guarantee:

  • Plan your route following cycling routes and quiet streets.
  • Drive in a straight line, be predictable, indicate your maneuvers and try to foresee the of motorists.
  • Do not hit the parked cars: someone could open a door.
  • Circulate at the proper speed.
  • Be aware of the ground: there may be potholes or slippery surfaces.
  • Increase precautions with rain.
  • Park in places reserved for bicycles.
  • If you leave it on the sidewalk, check that it measures more than three meters and park it parallel to the curb, without obstructing the passage or using trees.
  • Reminds children under 16 that they should always wear a helmet, both on their own bicycle and transported by adults.
  • Park your bike in busy and illuminated places to avoid theft.
  • Keep the serial number of your bike and register it (www.biciregistro.es): it will be easier to recover it.
  • Lock, always, the painting.

Cycling by bike is a pleasure, if you get used to it, you will not want to change it for anything, you will feel better, you will save money, you will contribute to the environment and you will enjoy your city, the sun and the fresh air.
